The Pitcairn Islands is the last British territory in the pacific and it’s located in the southern Pacific Ocean. Prior to the 15th century when the first Polynesians settlers arrived there, the Islands remained uninhabited. The island offers an enjoyably moderate climate all year round.
To get to the Pitcairn islands, one must first fly to Mangareva in the Gambier Islands. Because the islands has no airstrips, one must approach the Islands by water and that may well mark the beginning of one’s vacation in the Pitcairn islands by boarding different cruise ships. Private yachts are available to ferry tourists to and from the islands.
The island is populated with barely fifty permanent residents who are descendants of the early Polynesian settlers. Due to a lack of ports of any kind, the island remains largely unexplored and is thus quite wild. There is no secure anchorage or lodging on the island and permission from the administration in Auckland must be sought and once granted, one will be furnished with lodging and other conveniences.
Hotels are non-existent
on the island but one can enjoy the very good hospitality of the local people in their natural homes. Also, luxury villas complete with swimming pools and self catering holiday apartments are available to rent for those who cannot part with a measure of privacy and freedom.
One needs upwards of a few days to really get to know about the Pitcairners and their island. One needs ample time to explore this wild land. From the Pitcairn Island, the tourist/explorer is advised to sail to the Henderson Island if he/she wants a special and memorable excursion. The Henderson Island’s mark as a world heritage site is a testament to the virgin sights and sounds that can be experienced here.
Water enthusiasts can run amok as they can enjoy snorkeling and scuba diving. Bird watching is a favorite pastime of tourists here and the island boasts of a lot of unique species of birds.
The main occupation of the islanders is honey collection and crude bee farming. The honey obtained thereof is said to be of unparalleled quality, pure and disease free. As a result of this, the tourists are barred from bringing any bee related paraphernalia to the islands.
There is a lovely museum here that showcases in detail the island’s history. The island derives a sizable source of income from stamp collecting and its study. Vacationing in the Pitcairn Islands may prove to be on the expensive side but a number of activities to do and places to visit make it a worthwhile experience and money well spent.
