The Channel Islands are a stunning archipelago of small islands located right in the heart of the English Channel between southern Great Britain and Northern France and include Guernsey, Jersey and Alderney, Sark and Herm and also many much smaller islands. The Channel Islands make an excellent destination for a holiday as they combine a cosmopolitan, laid back way of life with some stunning natural scenery and a pleasantly warm climate and there are plenty of things to see and do for all ages.

Beauport Bay, Jersey

Jersey
Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands and is a beautiful place with a romantic, windswept coastline and miles of green, lush farmland. You can easily cycle around Jersey in just a few hours and as there is hardly any traffic this is one of the best ways to explore this peaceful and idyllic island. Jersey is famous for its wonderful seasonal foods, and there are many excellent country pubs and Michelin-starred restaurants where you can enjoy some of the delicious cuisine exquisitely prepared from the freshest local ingredients including excellent seafood and fruit and vegetables (such as the world renowned Jersey Royal potatoes). There are many things to see and do on Jersey and there are two prominent golf courses, the La Moye in St Brelade and Royal Jersey in Grouville which are members only and also Les Mielles and Les Ormes which are both 18-hole courses that are open to the public. Fishing is also very popular in Jersey and you can charter boats out from the harbor which will take you to the best spots and also provide you with all the equipment you need as well. Jersey has some stunning beaches, ideal for romantic strolls, swimming and sunbathing, and there are also plenty of watersports on offer including windsurfing, waterskiing and surfing, which are available at locations such as St Brelade’s Bay and St Ouen’s Bay.

Guernsey
Guernsey is another beautiful destination in the Channel Islands, and has a warm, almost tropical feel with some wonderful beaches and botanical gardens to enjoy. Guernsey is just 28 miles off the coast of France and has a distinctly Gallic way of life and the laid back atmosphere is ideal for relaxing on holiday and there are a number of amazing restaurants and bistros serving finely prepared local cuisine. Guernsey holds a strategic position in the Channel and has been occupied many times in its long history and there are a number of fortifications around the island including Ivy Castle (close to Le Bouet), which was once a Norman stronghold. There are also various remnants from WWII such as the German Underground Hospital at St Andrew. Guernsey also has a thriving arts community and the Guernsey Eisteddfod Society Annual Festival (www.guernseyeisteddfod.co.uk) is a popular event which is held throughout January, February and March each year and celebrates the best of local arts and entertainments.

The UK has some diverse and beautiful landscapes, from the golden sandy beaches of Cornwall through to the trendy city centre of London, and there are so many fantastic places to go on holiday visitors will be spoilt for choice. Here are just a few of the top holiday destinations in the UK.

Mawgan Porth, Cornwall

Few beaches in the country can match the stunning rugged beauty of Mawgan Porth, which is on the north coast of Cornwall near Newquay. Imposing cliffs on all sides of the beach protect the soft white sands from the worst of the weather, and the water is so clear and blue it looks like a Mediterranean paradise. There are also a number of rock pools and caves that children will enjoy exploring, and because you are near the most south westerly point of the country the sunsets are unrivalled, and there is nothing between you and the horizon apart from miles of wild Atlantic Ocean. Surfing is popular as well on this beach, and there is a school for beginners here and several excellent surf shops nearby selling equipment and clothing.

Eilean Shona, Scotland

If you like to get away from other people on your holidays, then Eilean Shona is the place for you. This private island off the west coast of Scotland is just a short boat ride from the mainland, and offers a tranquil, setting of white sand beaches, native woodlands and rolling hills. You can stay at the beautiful historic house, which sleeps up to 11 adults and 8 children, and comes complete with a full compliment of staff. A holiday on this stunning island will set you back by £7,000 per week full board, which if you fill the house right up works out to be £368 per person, which is not bad for the chance to stay on such a stunning private island getaway.

London

There is so much to see and do in London you will be spoilt for choice, from the latest trendy bars and restaurants to seeing some of the most iconic historic monuments in the world (Big Ben, The Houses of Parliament etc). London also has several world class museums and art galleries, and top favourites included The Natural History Museum, The Tate Gallery and The Imperial War Museum. Lots of visitors come to London purely for the excellent shops, and this truly is one of the greatest shopping cities in the world with such a diverse range of departments stores, shops, boutiques, delicatessens, warehouses and markets on offer you can just about buy anything you could ever want here.

Britain has many excellent campsites, from wilderness camping on the rugged inhospitable moors of Devon and Cornwall to comfortable family caravanning in Cumbria, and there is something to suit every kind of camping enthusiast. Here are some of the top camping sites on offer in Britain.

Trevornick Holiday Park, Cornwall – this great family destination is just a short stroll from the beautiful Hollywell Bay beach, which has safe swimming and surfing waters and plenty of soft golden sand to relax on and enjoy the summer sun. Campsite facilities include a large adventure playground for kids, swimming pool, bars, restaurants and golf, and you can hire pre-erected Eurotents to make camping even more convenient. This campsite is also great value for money, and you can pitch up in the summer months for just £4.70 per adult, £1.20 per child per night.

Three Cliffs Bay, Gower – this campsite has some stunning views out over the beautiful Gower coastline, and is situated very close to the beach (although it is a bit of a steep climb). The area is ideal for long coastal and countryside walks, and the main bonus is that because the public car park is quite a long walk from the main beach, you will find even in the height of summer the beach is never overcrowded. Summer prices start from a £14 for a family tent (two adults, two children) or £11 for a small tent (two adults).

The Warren, Folkestone, Kent – this campsite also has some amazing views out over the ocean and surrounding coastline, and is situated at the top of those beautiful iconic white cliffs that stretch from Dover to Folkestone. There are also a few nice hideaway camping areas at the site tucked in among the trees, which are great for those campers who want a bit more privacy. Costs start from £4.65 per adults, £2.05 per children per night, for Caravan and Camping Club members.

Vale Of Pickering Caravan Park, North Yorkshire – this campsite is set in some of the most beautiful countryside in Yorkshire and is perfect for families as it has an excellent children’s play area and a large games field perfect for football, rounders and other games. The toilet and washing facilities are first class, and the whole site is well-maintained and kept in excellent condition. Prices start from £10 per tent pitch.
